The following cases were disoosed of . terday morning: - J ere Forbes, mentioned in our last ashav- ing been arrested on the charge of stealing chickens, was arraigned for larceny, found guilty and ordered to give security in the sum or. fou for bis appearance !at' the next term of the Superior Court, ' ! f John Mott, charged with larcenv. was found guilty and ordered to give bond in the sum of $200 f r his appearance at the next term of the Superior Court, i ' Mary Murphy, charged with f disorderly conduct, was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $10 and the costs! or work for thirty days On the streets. j ' Eliza Wright, charged with disorderly conduct, was found guilty and Ordered to pay a fine of $20 and costs i irJ work for thirty days on the streets. Eliza: being one of those courageous and independent fe males "who act on the principle Of the old adage, "be sure you are (W)right and then go ahead," took occasion to rise in presence of the court and denounce one of the wit nesses for the prosecution as a jd d liar." For this delicate; allusion,; in response, to the inquiry if she had anything! to say for herself, she was fined $10 or 80 days on the streets for contempt of court j Undaunted at this display of a determination on the part of the court to preserve jits dignity she immediately! reiterated the offensive epithet as applied to the witness in question, when another $10 or thirty days! on the streets was placed to her account for I contempt. The irate defendant thereuoon recom- menced a tirade of abuse against the witness alluded to, failing to take her cat when or dered to do so by the Court, -w hen another fine of $20 or 30 days on the streets for con tempt was registered against heft This was too much for even Eliza's nerves and she suddenly collapsed, the record against her at this stage of the proceedings!; exhibiting "fines aggregating the amount bf $60, or 130 days on the streets. j f j f Just as this rather novel; case had been finally disposed of a person evidently en dowed with a very cheerful disposition, and possessed of a keen sense of the ridiculous withal, who answered to the rather signifi cant name of Mary Eliza Lively, suddenly burst forth, to the consternation of the Court and the amusement of the spectators, in a genuine ha! ha! ha! Fo this display of levity in the presence of Justice on the part of the lively creatureshe was ordered to pay a fiae of $5 or work for- 10 days on the streets, for contempt of Court. Body Recovered The loqnem.i The body of Mary McKenzie, the young colored woman who was drowned by the swamping of a small boat inj the river, near the foot of Market street, on the afternoon of Friday, the 12th inst., was discovered yesterday morning, by two colored men who were standing on the wharf bear Messrs. Oldham & Cumming's mill, street, drifting down with foot of Dock the current. They immediately procure !a!uoatand se- cured the body, taking it into the dock at that point. Coroner Hewlett was notified, who summoned a jury, and at 10 o'clock A. M. proceeded to hold an inquest over the body. The remains of the unfortunate wo man presented a very fevolting spectacle, having been in the water sixteen days. De ceased was about 21 or 22 years of age. . After a careful investigation and ; an ad journment to secure additional evidence the jury finally returned a verdict that de ceased came to her death from accidental drowning." - "j. ) " II A large number of both white and colored people, the latter greatly j predominating, crowded the wharf where'lhe remains were exposed during the forenoon jfor the ". pur pose f getting a view of them, the deceased being well known among the colored popu lation, t ! :, , Two Children Burned to Death. A fair correspondent atBogne, Columbus county, under date of March 26tb, gives the details of a most shocking accident that oc curred the previous afternoon. The house of Jacob Powell, a respectable colored man living near Bogne, canght fire' and burned to death two children who. were in it at the time. The father and mother of the child ren were at work in a field about a mile dis tant and were not aware of the fire in time to 6ave their offspring. The shrieks of the frantic mother, when she beheld the situa tion, are represented . to have been truly heart-rending, and it is thought she would have done serious injury; to herself in her attempt to save her children had not the by standers restrained her by main force.. The children had been left in the care of an aged negress, who shut them up in the house and went to visit a neighbor. No blame is attached to the aged woman's act. however, other than the carelessness mani fested in the premises. I I The charred remains of the unfortunate children were taken from ' the debris and buried on Friday morningl Stealing CIara Arrest of the Thief. John Mott, colored, who will be remem bered as the party who turned State's wit ness in a recent case of larceny in which he was implicated, and in which Annie J.
